Monongalia County Justice Center was a 84,000 sf, 4-floor, full renovation of the existing Morgantown post office into the new justice center. The new justice center contains holding cells, offices, records rooms and several court rooms.
The entire front facade of the building was removed to allow for the installation of the new floor to ceiling curtainwall windows. This was one of the most difficult parts of the project due to the weight of the existing masonry and steel that had to be carefully removed and lowered. The remaining masonry veneer and precast was restored to its original condition while the interior was completely demolished. Three new elevators were installed in addition to modernizing two existing elevators.
High-end finishes are included throughout the building boasting cherry wood veneer panels in all court rooms and covering jury benches, judges benches and entry door surrounds. All corridors and most common area spaces are covered with ceramic tile, including the front entry lobby, which has fifteen foot walls of tile.
The existing parking deck and parking garage behind the building were both repaired and upgraded to allow parking for the entire building.
The building also includes a very sophisticated security system containing cameras throughout and electronic locks on most doors.
